Cameras For Communication (C4C)

Posed PhotoCameras for Communication (C4C) is a practical training course, covering basic camera operating skills, specifically for communication.

The first two photos here are from Mercy Isaacs and they illustrate formal and informal photographs. Mercy is a Dadamac Learner.

John Dada would like all Fantsuam Foundation staff/volunteers to be able to use cameras well, in order to record what happens at FF, and to communicate effectively within the organisation and to outsiders, especially to report to donors and funding agencies

Many people who are not comfortable writing reports can share information  much more easily by using a camera. This is particularly true in rural Nigeria - an area with high levels of illiteracy, a culture of oral communication rather than written communication,  where English is an additional language for most people, and not the language of choice.

Taking photos

Cameras for Communication (C4C) module 1 is an introduction to using cameras for taking photos.  In rural Nigeria this training is not just a matter of learning to use a camera, it is also a matter of learning to look at photos and recognise the difference between a good photographic image and a poor one. It is hard to "develop the eye of a photographer" in an area where even in schools there are hardly any books and posters and where locally available printed materials are generally of poor quality

Video training

Kazanka ComfortKazanka Comfort (Fantsuam Foundation general secretary) wants the field officers to record interviews with micro-finance clients, as a method of accurate reporting. The field officers visit clients once a month, cover a large geographic area, and could bring back useful information if they had the skills to do so.

This could be the next module for C4C

Distance learning

Ricardo, who is writing the course in the UK, has never been to Africa, and is not intending to go, but he loves to share his knowledge. That is possible through Dadamac and our use of the Internet. He is learning from the team in Nigeria what is, and is not, possible in their situation, and adapts  his course materials in response to what he learns.

Within Dadamac we are interested in helping people to share knowledge in new ways, and welcome additional people to our team who are ready to learn as well as teach.

Using Cameras to Document First Aid

A patient has a minor injury, such as a twisted ankle when playing football.Position the hands as indicted above, to form a ‘seat’.Lower the ‘seat’ and allow the victim to sit on it (bend your legs, not your back). When the victim is on the ‘seat’, stand using your legs, keeping your back straight.Carry the patient to somewhere they can get treatment.

Involvement

This development of C4C is unfunded. It is a Dadamac Open Knowledge project, where we all contribute what we know in order to create something tangible.
